Take this Quiz to find out what your Dosha is!

According to Ayurveda (a form of alternative medicine that originated in India), things are composed of five basic elements: space/ether, fire, water, air, and earth. These elements combine to form three metabolic types, which are also called doshas. The Vata dosha is a combination of air and space, the Pitta dosha is comprised of fire and water, and the Kapha dosha is a combination of water and earth. People are thought to be born with a combination of one or two dominant doshas which determine our physical, mental, and emotional characteristics.

 What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound, or cannabinoid, found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. There are several varieties of the cannabis plant, including industrial hemp and marijuana. While CBD can be derived from either plant, it is more commonly derived from industrial hemp where it is far more prevalent than in marijuana. Unlike its sister cannabinoid, THC, it is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you high. The CBD used in our products is hemp-derived and none of our products contain any THC.

What Is It Used to Treat?

Exciting new research is showing CBD to be effective in treating a number of conditions. Some of the common ailments people use CBD to treat include:

  • Anxiety

  • Arthritis

  • Chronic Pain/Inflammation

  • Skin Irritation

  • Epilepsy

  • Insomnia

How Does It Work?

Much research is currently being done on this question. We now know two primary ways in which CBD works in the body (a deeper study of these mechanisms will surely continue to reveal more):

Stimulates our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) – This nifty system was only discovered by scientists in the early 1990s. The ECS refers to a collection of cell receptors and corresponding molecules. You can think of cell receptors like little locks on the surface of your cells. The keys to these locks are chemical molecules called agonists. Each time an agonist binds to a cell it relays a message, giving your cell specific direction.

The endocannabinoid system is the name for a series of cell receptors that respond to certain kinds of agonists. Two primary cell receptors make up the ECS, Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 (CB2). The keys for these receptors are called endocannabinoids, which are essentially the body’s own version of THC and CBD (which are phytocannabinoids). Cannabinoid receptors are found all throughout the body, including the skin, giving them a wide variety of functions. However, certain receptors are more concentrated in specific regions. CB1 receptors are abundant in the central nervous system. CB2 receptors are more often found on immune cells, in the gastrointestinal tract, and in the peripheral nervous system.

The ECS plays an important role in neuroprotection, stress recovery, immune balance, and homeostatic regulation (maintaining a stable internal environment). When CBD binds with these receptors, a mechanism is triggered in the ECS to produce a wide array of therapeutic and healing responses.

Helps to Regulate Key Body Functions – Thus far, CBD is known to directly or indirectly affect three other receptors (Vanilloid, Adenosine, and Serotonin) that are important for pain modulation, the sleep-wake cycle, and mood and stress management. It has also been linked to a spike in the naturally occurring “bliss molecule,” anandamide, which helps to regulate functions like pleasure, appetite, memory, sleep, and pain.
