While our focus at Soulstice is meditation and mindfulness, we’re also huge fans of yoga and its incredible benefits… Similar to meditation, the practice of yoga can calm the nervous system, relax the body, relieve stress and pent-up anxiety and help you feel more connected, present and balanced.
In many cultures the asanas (yogic poses) are viewed as a precursor to meditation, an intentional discipline that helps prepare the mind, body and spirit for seated meditation. Mindful movement through a series of poses stretches and unwinds muscles, detoxifies tissues and organs, focuses the mind, deepens and slows the breath and balances energy. After practicing yoga, the mind is best prepared to settle into a meditative state… relaxed, even and open.
Practicing yoga prior to meditating is a delicious combination for anyone, but especially wonderful for beginners and those brand new to sitting. For newbies with highly active minds, the idea of sitting still — alone, quiet, with nothing but their churning thoughts — is mildly terrifying. Just as an athlete warms up before a competition, yoga helps one ease into practice, preparing the body and mind to locate the soul of stillness.
In addition to our weekly meditation offerings, we average at least one combined yoga or movement class each day. These classes have been curated to be combined in tandem with a blossoming meditation practice — one will deepen and enhance the other. Depending on your individual constitution, you may thrive with a more physically dynamic flowing Vinyasa style yoga preceding your sitting (Wednesdays at 9:30AM.) Or, a more deliberate, precise and breath-focused practice may be your ticket (Mondays at 12NOON.) Yoga asanas that tap into your intuition and creativity while stretching the body can be found as well (Fridays at 9:30AM.) Yin style yoga opens the muscles, the chakras, and the heart and turns the focus inward (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30AM,) while restorative, mindful yoga balances the mind-body-spirit with its gentle strength (Tuesdays at 1PM and Thursdays at 10:00AM.) Our team is happy to advise you, or try them all!
Are we a yoga studio? Nope! There are many and myriad yoga studios that we adore and refer to, but we are not a yoga studio. Our philosophy and yoga offerings are intended to prepare, sweeten and deepen your meditation and mindfulness practice. We trade pumping music for the peace of the breath, sweat for spirit, and speed for gentle slowness. We’re into the creation of sanctuary for the sensitive, sustenance for the soul and bathing in sweet silence. Join us… a single class will change your day; more will change your life!
