September’s theme over here at Soulstice is Detoxing + Cleansing… and that goes for your Mind as well! Just as you can purify your body with plants, herbs and potions (ask us!), there are small lifestyle changes you can make that will yield an amazing impact on your mental health + well-being.
Energy follows thought! If you trust your outer reality will come to reflect your inner environment, nourish your perception and bathe your brain in delicious, expansive content. For the next two weeks we invite you to try these tips and see if you experience a shift in how you feel in your body every day…
- Digital Detox: Your brain will thrive when gifted with an interval of silence and spaciousness. We invite you to completely unplug your TV, internet news and mainstream media and zoom in on the small, lovely details of your day and interactions. Reduce the number of times you check email each day to the minimum amount you can personally get away with. Set a cap on the number of times you check your social feeds. We’re all so overstimulated and pressured by media and technology; taking a break will mentally refresh you in ways you cannot even imagine — try it!
- No Gossip: This one is wonderful — and interesting! — trust me. The definition of gossip is “idle, casual or unconstrained conversation, typically about other people.” Once you eliminate all gossip from your interactions it will really shed light on how and what you’re focusing your thoughts and attention on every day. For all of your communication in the next two weeks, ask yourself if what you’re about to say is: Kind, True, and Necessary. Not only will this practice steep your brain in pure positivity, it will reveal to you which relationships in your life have real depth and meaning. Limiting your speech to what is kind, true and necessary will free and lighten your mind and create space for possibility and authentic connection.
- Salve your Senses. Going without the distractions of television, media and gossip for two weeks might be ultra-intimidating to a lot of us. While we rely on these outlets to ease our daily anxiety, they actually have the opposite effect on our nervous systems, often to an extent we’re not aware. Soothe and invite your mind to relax by replacing our manmade addictions with creativity and the natural world: Walk in the green forest or alongside the ocean. Spend more time outdoors. Breathe fresh air and soak in the sun. Visit an art gallery or museum. Get a massage. Wander to a town you’ve never been before. Dance. Sing. Stream music you love throughout your home. I recently discovered (and have fallen in love with) mantra, kirtan and devotional music — — experiment with new music, an art form or movement activity you’ve never tried before. Without the constant whirring of overstimulation and distraction, your mind will be in an especially receptive state to absorb all the natural beauty and healing in the world.
